Reinhart Speeckaert, MD, PhD

Reinhart Speeckaert is a Professor of Dermatology in the Department of Dermatology at Ghent University Hospital in Ghent, Belgium. His clinical work focuses on inflammatory skin disorders, particularly vitiligo, but also on a wide range of other immune-mediated diseases. His first PhD in Dermatology (in 2012) focused on the immunosurveillance of melanocytes in conditions ranging from melanoma to vitiligo. He gained a second PhD (in 2014) in Clinical Chemistry, which dealt with the clinical implications of the genetic polymorphism in the haptoglobin gene.
The combination of clinical practice and research enables Professor Speeckaert to study the skin’s fascinating immune responses. Furthermore, the FWO’s (Research Foundation – Flanders) research mandate has allowed him to conduct various types of studies, including translational research and clinical trials. This has resulted in over 120 published A1 journal articles, chapters in several textbooks, and opportunities to speak at international meetings. These findings have contributed to recent advances in vitiligo management.. Professor Speeckaert enjoys communicating about new advances in dermatology and providing dermatologists with the most up-to-date practical guidelines for improving dermatology patient care.
